The Brief
The clients were undertaking an extensive renovation of their period farmhouse and wanted the garden to feel like a natural extension of the home. They were looking for a contemporary interpretation of a traditional country courtyard that respected the rural setting and surrounding views. The challenge was creating several practical spaces for dining, relaxing and entertaining within a relatively compact footprint, while maintaining a strong connection to the wider landscape.
The design/ materials and planting
Our inspiration came directly from the character of the property and its rural setting. We wanted the garden to feel rooted in the history of the farmhouse while supporting a modern way of living. The material palette was deliberately simple and timeless, combining Corten steel, red clay brick pavers and oak, all chosen for their warm tones and ability to sit comfortably alongside the existing architecture.
The layout creates a series of distinct seating and entertaining areas, with spaces for dining, lounging and outdoor cooking connected by carefully considered pathways and views. Corten steel hoops act as sculptural focal points, framing the surrounding countryside and helping to define the garden without interrupting its connection to the landscape. A large water feature references the troughs that cattle visit in the adjoining field.
The planting was designed to be low maintenance, pollinator-friendly and rabbit resilient, using familiar favourites such as lavender, roses, hydrangeas and herbs arranged in a more contemporary and naturalistic way.
Working with HGL
We regularly collaborate with Hythe Garden Landscapes on our premium design and build projects, and this was the second garden we had designed and delivered together for these clients. Returning to work with the same homeowners is always particularly rewarding, and the established relationships between client, designer and contractor helped create a smooth and enjoyable process from start to finish.
What we value most about HGL is their attention to detail, professionalism and commitment to delivering gardens to an exceptionally high standard. Their communication is clear and proactive, both with clients and our design team, ensuring nothing is overlooked and that the design is implemented as intended. We share a similar approach to projects, placing equal importance on craftsmanship, client experience and long-term quality.
As with any complex renovation project, challenges inevitably arise, but by working closely together throughout the build, we were able to deliver a garden that feels entirely at home within its setting and has exceeded the clients' expectations.
The finished garden
What works particularly well is the way the garden feels both connected to and protected from the wider landscape. The Corten steel hoops frame the countryside views beautifully while creating a sense of enclosure. The material palette feels at home alongside the farmhouse, and despite the garden's modest size, it offers multiple places to gather, relax, cook and dine. The clients often tell us how much visitors admire the garden, which is always rewarding to hear.
Key considerations
We are particularly proud that this project has been shortlisted for the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) Awards 2027 in the Design Over £100,000 category. Being recognised by the industry is a wonderful endorsement of the care, creativity and craftsmanship invested in the project. Finalists will be announced ahead of the awards ceremony in March 2027.
